Let us show you that the ‘hills are still very much alive’ with our most unique Sound of Music Tour.  Relive with us the true story of the von Trapp family which was filmed as the “Sound of Music” in and around Salzburg.

The tour which has been Salzburg’s most popular tour for over 35 years, is a combination of both this historical city and the breathtaking Salzkammergut -Lakes and Mountains area - also a famous musical and cultural centre. Our company Salzburg Sightseeing Tours (Albus) was involved in the making of the film back in 1965 and today our experienced tour guides are proud to show guests from around the world where this famous movie was filmed.

Salzburg was of course the home of the real Trapp Family and this tour lets you see many of the original locations making it a truly memorable experience not to be missed during your visit.

Relive with us the true story of the von Trapp family which was filmed as the “Sound of Music” in and around Salzburg.

Highlights

-The Mirabell Gardens: Shown in many scenes including where Maria and the children were seen dancing around the statue of Pegasus, the winged horse and throughout the gardens singing “Do-Re-Mi”.

-The Gazebo/Hellbrunn Palace where Rolf and Liesl sang “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and Maria and the Baron sang “Something Good”.

-Palace of Leopoldskron: This historical 18th Century palace and its grounds provided many locations for the movie.

-Nonnberg Abbey: This historical abbey founded in the year 714 was used both in the movie and the true story.

-St. Gilgen/Lake Wolfgang: This picturesque area was featured in the opening sequence of the movie.

-Church of Mondsee: The Sound of Music Wedding Church. This historical church of Mondsee was the location of the movie wedding between Maria and the Baron.

" Lots of fun "
5 out of 5 stars
Despite the weather being wet and grey, this tour can’t fail to put a smile on anyone’s face. Peter, the tour guide, is a wonderful host and keeps everyone entertained with jokes, quips and anecdotes. Okay, so you don’t get up close to some of the buildings (some reviewers have moaned) but I didn’t care! The views are breathtaking. It’s relatively cheap and worth every Euro. Four hours of lighthearted fun with like minded people.
" Well worth it..... "

The tour and our guide, David, was excellent. He covered and shared all details of the movie plus the reality of the Von Trapp family. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
" A fun afternoon "
4 out of 5 stars
Loved finding out about the film trickery and our expert guide was full of interesting facts as well as full of energy on a really hot day. Within the limitations of permissions and restrictions we saw the key film sites around Salzburg. Visitors are encouraged to take a city walking tour to see other places, and to go back to some of the paces we went to to explore in more depth. But it was a fun and enjoyable afternoon. I loved having the opportunity to sing the songs but it would have been useful to have song words on the screen in the bus as the wifi didn't work for many people to access lyrics on their phones.
" Excellent tour guide with lots of insider info about the movie! "
5 out of 5 stars
We are a family of 4 with 2 little ones who have seen the movie before coming to Salzburg. I am a huge fan of the Sound of Music movie and so I am particularly impressed by all the insider info our tour guide explained to us (like, what that 20% difference from the real Maria story). It was a smooth bus ride, fully occupied, but amazingly we were on time to see all the spots on schedule (well time management from our guide!). Due to private roads and other concerns, we didn’t stop at every site, but we did spend a good 45mins of the 4-hour tour at the Mondsee (very nice lake and little town for a walk/coffee). Our guide doesn’t forget to tell us all the bus stops and routes as we go along which we can take to go back to those spots which we couldn’t get any closer as a guided tour. Very helpful! And he made a great effort to encourage the group to sing-along some of the movie’s most favourite songs along the way! Great atmosphere and my kids enjoyed singing Do-Re-Mi, So Long Farewell and humming the tunes which they heard before. All in all, very happy indeed with the whole tour!
" Very nice, but "

Pleasant experience. We’ve seen lots of scenery throughout the tour. Our guide David was fantastic. But we needed to come closer to some locations related to the movie and not only see them from afar. Other than that the trip was enjoyable, the bus very comfortable and the driver Franz was super.
" Great tour... "

Enjoyed the tour immensely. Great locations, great guide.
" Thank you David and Haki! "

Amazing tour, exceeded all expectation!! David is amazing!!!
" Great fun, especially as we know the film from what must be hundreds of watching with our three girls when they were young. "

The tour was in general excellent. Our guide was very informative and fun. Here are a couple of less positive points that may help: (in no particular order) - the stop at Mondsee for a break we found to be very short, and the food was seriously expensive compared with its quality. Our waitress took the proffered 20E note for payment and simply did not give change of 4E. The food (a very plain salad and apple strudel was ordinary at best. - some of the stops seemed a bit contrived (perhaps inevitable). The Hellbrun gazebo, for example. - at times there were pointers to photo points but the bus was moving too fast (trees etc) for photos to work. These possibly sound serious but are not offered in that spirit, more in case these points assist. It was a very good experience. Thank you.
" Filming Locations Galore! "
4 out of 5 stars
This tour does an incredible job of showing as many filming locations as possible in just a 4 hour span of time. Something I felt the tour was lacking was more "behind-the-scenes" information. Everything the guide shared was in the film she showed us on our way back from the mountain district which seemed very repetitive. I also wish she would have encouraged more singing on the bus from folks instead of letting people feel uncomfortable. As for the sites, it was wonderful to see everything.
" Overall, it was a lot of fun, but not everything I expected "
3 out of 5 stars
Overall, the guide was really good and nice. Besides that, we got a lot of funny and interesting information. The only thing I was a bit disappointed about is that the tour did not include a visit to the nonnery. We only saw it from far away. Besides that, I only have positive comments.
" Dream come true! "

This tour is something I have always wanted to do. Sound of Music is my favourite film of all time and hear about the history of the filming and see the beautiful scenery was breathtaking!
" Worth going on even if you are not a fan of the movie "

My daughter and i thoroughly enjoyed. Not sure if it would have been as enjoyable if the tour guide was not as interactive and entertaining as ours (David) Thank you David ! I think the goat needs a female companion 🤗
" Very balanved, informative and fun tour with good sightseeing. "

The tour was great. I would recommend one thing. The only contact number was in Netherlands and we had difficulty to reach the exact tour operators in Salzburg on the tour mırning. We were arriving to Salzburg by train that morning and the train had a delay. We caught the tour at one stop, but it would be great to have one contact number in Salzburg as well. It was really hard to be connected via Amsterdam. Thanks.
" Sound if music tour "

I bought my 6 year old granddaughter on the tour who was really looking forward to it having learnt all of the songs over the last 6 months. I was a little disappointed with the lack of music and interaction with the guests singing the songs. Was also disappointed with the fact we only visited a few places where the movie was made especially not the hill from the opening scene which my granddaughter was desperate to see
" Wonderful and Inspiring, Fun and Funny - mainly thanks to David! "

What a stupendous experience! Our tour guide David was the best, highly overqualified :) He even caused my cynical man who's not into musicals, to tremendously enjoy the day and laugh a lot, while I devoured the songs, the sights and my wonderful childhood memories.
" Wonderful, informative and FUN! "

Our tour guide Anna, made our trip not only very informative but very enjoyable. She was able to get the whole bus load of folks singing and enjoying the trip! The driver Dragan (spelling?) did such a great job that I hardly felt I was on a bus and I typically I have motion sickness. I'd go on a tour with Anna and Dragan any time! Lovely tour!! Thank you!
" Amazing Sound of Music Tour! "
4 out of 5 stars
There were 5 of us, 2 adults and 3 children (11, 9, and 6). We had all seen the Sound of Music recently, so the kids knew what to look for at each location. It rained in the morning, but our tour guide knew how to keep our spirits up and keep everyone motivated. The drive to Mondesee was a little longer than we expected, but the free time while we were there more than made up for it. There was an incident with another bus in the parking lot at Mondesee, but the tour guide handled it all professionally, kept us all informed, and even worked the schedule to take some of the guests to the train station so they wouldn't miss their train. I really enjoyed the tour and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see the highlights of Salzburg and the Sound of Music!
" Great way to see the highlights of Salzburg "

Peter & Ferdinand were exceptional. Truly enjoyed the tour- loved the Sound of Music aspect but also enjoyed the historical perspective. A very enjoyable tour...especially as we are the non- tour types.
" Great day! ?? "

We are NOT into big bus tours but this was well done and not over the top “Sound of Music” it was informative about the city and surrounding area as well as the Movie sites. A good way to start your trip so you can get an idea of what you would be more interested in seeing during your stay.
" A Bucketlist Tour "
5 out of 5 stars
We got off to a rocky start as the address on my booking for Salzburg City Tours had my phone GPS doing laps around the Gardens nowhere near the pickup point. After walking around for over 15mins i asked one of the tour guides taking another bus with Panorama written all over it. He said to cross the road, check in with the company of Panorama Tours as it was the same company running both tours. There were lots of confused people on either side of the streets but eventually we got on a Panorama Tour bus. Anxiety and frustrated we would have just loved to see a sign with the Panorama Tour Company stating that it was also check in for Salzburg City Tours and we could have prevented an anxiety attack, tears and a fight between myself and my partner about why didn't i know where pickup was when the GPS from the website was leading me astray also. As for the tour - we had Peter - a semi retired gentleman who had been doing the tours for over 15yrs and he was exceptional, brilliant, completely knowledgeable with SOM info but also background of Salzburg and everyother question you could possibly think of. The tour was better than expected and at the end i had tears too, however tears of overwhelming joy knowing it was a bucketlist item I had ticked off and been a part of! Will recommend this to absolutely everyone - but will be telling them to book through Panorama to solve any issues with confusion on the day as even all the buses had Panorama on them - no Salzburg City Tours emblem/info anywhere we could see. 10/10
" Fantastic experience "

The last day of our vacation to Austria we spent in Salzburg. And we thank Salzburgcitytours.com for a fantastic tour round in Salzburg seeing some of the places where det beautiful film Sound of Music was made. And the guide Peter was half of the experience with his anekdotes, jokes with english humor and knowledge. We can recommend the tour to every Sound of Music lovers.
" Brilliant "
4 out of 5 stars
Past experience has made us wary of doing organised tours, however we loved this one. Our guide Peter and bus driver Ferdinand gave just the right mix of relevant and interesting information, humour, music and silence. The scenery needed no spruiking so it sold itself- spectacular! The Sound of Music tour fulfilled a lifelong dream for my wife and I am glad I joined in. A great experience for us- a real highlight of our 3 month holiday. Unable to fault it- 10 out of 10.

Absolutely fantastic tour. Very informative even if you have never watched the movie by the end of the tour you will understand what it’s all about. Ana our guide was brilliant with her knowledge on the movie, sights we visited and her personally was so vibrant. She was a walking encyclopaedia on The Sound of Music. It was a very fun tour with singalongs included. A must when in Salzburg.

We grew up watching the film so as we were going to be in Salzburg we signed up for the tour. I didn't realise I should have brought a voucher so we went to the kiosk in Mirabelle Platz and the gentleman in lederhosen was very helpful. Peter was our guide and very informative on the film and locations.

" EXCELLENT WONDERFUL AMAZING "

Our tour guide was the cutest elderly man, Peter. He explained that he has since retired from being a tour guide but still stays in touch with the tour company if they need him to do last minute tours, which happened to be thbe case for the one we went on! He was such a wonderful man and make jokes along the way. He ensured everyone was singing and enjoying themselves. You will most definitely be lucky to have Peter as your guide. The tour itself was absolutely spectacular. This tour gives you the most fulfilling Sound of Music experience. If you are a fan (or even if you’re not) it will make all your dreams come true. The bus takes you high up into the mountains and provides you with breathtaking views of Salzburg. Needless to say, this tour is a MUST if you are visiting Salzburg. It is informative as the guide will give you “inside facts” about the movie as well as thas city that you would otherwise not know if you don’t go on the tour. I would highly recommend it !

" Amazing Tour, a MUST DO! "
5 out of 5 stars
The Sound of Music tour is a MUST when visiting Salzburg! It was absolutely amazing and without a doubt the best tour I've been on. I'm studying abroad here and have traveled to lots of different destinations already, yet the Sound of Music tour is probably one of my favorite memories so far. We saw the majority of the sets from the movie, drove into the Alps, and stopped in a cute little town to get strudel and see the church where Maria gets married. The tour guide (David) was hilarious, energetic, and knew his info. He told us some secrets and fun facts from the movie and we sang songs from the movie on the bus ride. Would 110% do again, hope to come back in the summer one day!
